Build or Remodel

BUILD REMODEL

Advantages:

  • Custom Design based on the individual needs of the person(s) with disability
  • Much less expensive than remodeling when accessible features are compared "apples to apples"
  • Higher resale value because of the value of the accessible features and the demand for homes that are accessible

Advantages:

  • Provided that the existing house is conducive to a particular project, a consumer can choose the community they wish to live in
  • Even though the cost is still more than the value added to the house, remodeling is often more practical for small projects that do not add much to the overall accessibility of the home (i.e. one ramp to an exterior door or grab bars in a bathroom)

Disadvantages:

  • Land may not be available in the community or neighborhood that a consumer wants to live in, particularly first and second ring suburbs
  • May not be practical for individuals or families with limited income or financial resources; minor remodeling might be a more realistic option

Disadvantages:

  • Improvements limited by the current structure, fewer options for accessibility
  • More expensive than new construction when the cost of remodeling is added to the cost of the existing property
  • Increase in value of the house after remodeling is almost never as much as the high cost of remodeling
